Scillonian Magazine Indexes

The R. M. Baxter Index - Issue 1 to Issue 200 The Ed Cumming Index - Issues 201 to Current: 280

The Scillonian Magazine is a wonderful archive of Scillonian community history from 1925.  Unlike many local newspapers it focuses its news every six mouths and does not indulge in inane headlines and petty stories.  The late Mr R. M. Baxter (Issues 1 to 200) and myself, now trying to index the later issues, have reviewed the magazine very selectively.  This has resulted in a biased index which will only be improved over time with the opinion and contribution of others.  As time goes on many more of these articles may need to be added; Tempus Fugit.

Despite only starting in 1925 many of the contributors to the Scillonian Magazine have provided many historical gems, research often going back centuries. In digitising this index you will now be able to search it, either using the browser's search engine (Web) or the search facility in the E-Book version of this site.   So historically important, are some of the contributions that they are (apart from the residents of Scilly who can access a full set at the local museum) not easily found on researching the archives.  Unfortunately, as with much of Scillypedia, the search will not lead to the actual article but will guide you to the issue and page of the magazine you will require.

It is also helpful if I list, just some of the local topics covered over the years, many of which are day to day matters not included in the index:

GROUP TYPES: Activities; Agencies; Associations; Arts; Branches; Brigades; Boards; Cadets; Campaigns; Chapter (as of Masons); Charities; Circles; Clubs; Committees; Congregations; Co-ordinators; Crafts; Crews;  Entertainers; Families; Force; Foundations; Friends (of); Groups; Guilds; Harriers; Homes; Hubs; Inspectors; Institutes; Leagues; Legions; Lodges; Officers; Organisations; Quilters; Services; Shooters; Shows; Societies; Sports; Stewards; Thespians; Trusts; Watches etc.

SUBJECTS

Accommodation; Tourism; Travel; Charter etc.

Churches;  Council Issues; Customs & Excise; Duchy; Farming; Fishing; Health; Hospital; Housing; Museum; Schools; Services (Other); Shops; Police; Public Houses; RNLI; Veterinary etc.

Births; Crime; Deaths (& Obituaries); Off Island News;  Letter to the Editor; Marriages; People; Stories (Various Subjects); Poems; Visitors & Visits etc.

Archaeology; Climate; Geology; Fauna; Flora; History; Maritime; Military; Ornithology; Population; Coastal Defence etc.

Issues 1 to 200

This index is transcribed/digitized from Mr. R. M. Baxter’s original in the Isles of Scilly Museum.  The numbers are Edition Number/Page Number(s).  I have had trouble reading some of the type, so be a little careful, there are mistakes.  Some followed by ? will certainly need to be checked.  Please feel free to correct mistakes and to add other references to the Baxter Index if you feel he or I have missed something of relevance. Like Mr. Baxter, as I add the later editions they will also be selective, in trying to record mainly material of a relevant, historical nature.

The hyperlinks below can also be used to find the alphabetical headings and the multiple entry headings for issues 1 to 200, these are coloured and underlined.  This is a very long list/page; use your browser to 'Find on the Page'.  If you would like to search specific issues of the magazine e.g. Number 200, type 200/ into the Search Box.  For E-Book versions of Scillypedia, use the 'Search' panel which will search all the pages which make up the complete book.  Identify the topics in the Scillonian Magazine from the Search results.
