Times Newspaper Archive Index

Note:  The Isles of Scilly have very little, locally written history prior to the Scillonian Magazine launched in 1925. Most historical archives are to be found in the mainland archives.  The Times Archive is a rich source of Scillonian history. The current shipwreck data for Scilly is reasonably well recorded, however, when it comes to ships news and the various ship incidents the Times gives us the opportunity to study another side of Scilly’s complex maritime history together with many other fascinating snippets of local news. Ship repair & supply was obviously a very important source of work up to the use of iron & steam.

The material extracted here covers the period from 1785 to 1950.  This is just the Index, some of the articles have hyperlinks to the actual reports.  Ship's names are in capitals and information on these can be found in the Ship Incident Index which includes Shipwrecks.  Additional material welcome.  Some of the Times Ship Wreck Stories can be found in Times Reports
